Getting more things done in less time, wouldn’t you love that?

I am going to tell you how in a second.

I am Ron Ramsden and I am a DYB coach, also painting contractor up here in northern Massachusetts.

Let’s talk about getting things done!

How many times have you had that list where you’ve got estimates to write, you have postcards, you have to visit a job site, you have to do your budget, you have to do your QuickBooks online and so on.

It’s super overwhelming, so what do we usually do?

We usually check off a couple of easy things on our list, but the big things still weigh in the back of our mind.

I’ve actually woken up in the middle of the night, thinking about these six estimates which I should’ve done right on the spot.

The customers had already left a message, it’s day three, they should have been out two days ago, well I want to tell you how you are going to get these things done.

It’s called a Jam session.

A Jam session is an amount of time between 30 and 90 minutes, that is strictly uninterrupted productivity.

What do I mean by uninterrupted?

This means all of your notifications on all of your devices are completely shut off.

There’s no Facebook time, there’s no texting your crew, no texting a friend, no playing on YouTube, there is no playing on Facebook, there’s no answering email, there’s none of that.

You are going into a jam session, all of those notifications are turned off, head to the grindstone, your mind is on one thing, no multitasking, you are going to get something done, but I am going to tell you the tips of getting things done.

Sometimes, in the office isn’t the best place to get it done, sometimes, it’s going to a local coffee shop, putting on a set of earbuds, you don’t necessarily have to be listening to anything, but if a friend walks by they are going to see you with these earbuds on and you are going to be pounding away on your laptop and they are not going to want to bother you.

As well as that person next to you who wants to talk about the weather, when they see you with the earbuds, even if they are not connected to anything, they are going to leave you alone or they are more apt to at least leave you alone.

Some of us get distracted being at home, office, or the home offices, there are people moving around.

However, if you are at a different location sometimes that works even better, but what really works is if you are going to use earbuds.

This is a big bonus and this is how it’s really going to come together.

We’ll get to things you can do during your Jam session in a second, But first…

Mozart, you’ve heard of that guy, right?

He has some great music out there, specifically “Music for the Mozart Effect disc one”.

This is music that is proven by Stanford researchers to improve test scores, which means it makes you a little smarter, it’s going to be able to let you concentrate, so it’s also going to help you learn faster, it’s going to calm your whole body.

You don’t blast the music loud, you just have it in the background.

It reduces errors in whatever you are doing and the reason is that one side of the brain speaks to the other side of the brain so they actually work more efficiently together.

Don’t ask me how it is, I am a painting contractor, I am not a brain surgeon, although I did have a brain surgery, we can talk about that another time…

But it also improves your creativity and clarity. So, Mozart…Music for the Mozart effect disc one.

Anyways, you need to have jam sessions, 30-90 minutes and you want no distraction, headphones on, laptop out, and what you want to do is you want to go into that Jam session with a plan.

Okay, I would have six estimates to write, I have to invoice my customers, and I have to do my follow-up emails.

…and that’s what you do, you do your estimates, you do your follow-up emails and get yourself used to just doing those one or two things in order, bang, bang, bang!

Some jam sessions are 90 minutes long, but as for myself, I feel more comfortable at about 40-45 minutes.

Even then whatever I’m doing I start to get a little antsy… but in that 45 minutes, I can usually get about three hours’ worth of work done.

As for me, I like to get up in the morning, go to the gym, I come back, I sit down with my coffee and a water and I just plow through a Jam session.

Even if it’s reading, you want to read for 15 minutes part of your Jam session with no distractions, perfect time to catch up on that reading.

That is what a Jam session consists of; 90 minutes of uninterrupted concentration and getting things done.
