They are tough to set up as a habit. But success isn’t easy and you have to realize that if success were easy, well everybody would be doing this.
Not everybody will reach the top. So a question you might ask yourself before we go over these five habits are, how badly do you want it?
Are you willing to make some changes in your life that your friends aren’t making or act a different way that the average people aren’t acting?
Do you not want to be average anymore? Do you want to be different and be unique and different habits and hang around different people?
So you have to decide how bad you really want this before we talk about these five time management habits to help you to hit a million dollars peacefully.
Number 5. When we are driving around from day to day we need time to let our brain process everything that’s going on. And so habit number 5 is no radio.
Leave the radio off, especially now. It’s nothing but distraction and noise. So even if it’s just music, leave it off. You’ve got to leave it off and let your brain process.
Let that snow globe that’s getting shaken up during the day, let it all settle, let it all settle. Just like a snow globe, you can see clearly through it, well the same thing with your brain. You are going to be able to think clearly through everything that’s going on.
Number 4. Schedule an hour in between every meeting so that you have plenty of drive time to get from one to the next and you are not rushing and racing.
That is so important. In fact with the website funnel here, we have You Can Book Me at the bottom of every page.
If you have You Can Book Me yet, we have a free video for you. We’ll post the link in the bottom here where you can watch on YouTube or maybe in the podcast.
But you can book me, we’ve made sure that say, they book you at 8 AM, we would go ahead and block out 9:00 AM and then my next appointment could not be booked until 10 AM.
So this way I was able to be completely present with the person I was meeting with. Whether it was a one-to-one with a business or associate from Rotary, BNI, Chamber, or if I was at an estimate I was able to be present with them, 100%.
They didn’t feel rushed, I gave them all my attention, all my focus and all my energy. And they felt that and they appreciate that. And I wasn’t thinking about the next job or going to the next place. So then I had that hour to get to the next one.
Now if it wasn’t an hour away, bonus I get to run to Starbucks which I try to do every chance I get.
Schedule an hour in between every meeting. So no radio, schedule an hour in between every meeting.
Habit 3. What is an email inbox, it’s not your to-do list, it’s everybody else’s agenda for you! No email before 7 AM.
So you must take ownership of your time and your email inbox. You decide what’s most important for you. Then get to your email. It’s most certainly not opening up your email before 7 AM because then your reactionary mode straight from go.
By checking everybody elses agenda for sets you up for addiction to distraction for the rest of the day. You want to keep checking them, that’s the wrong way to start the day.
And that’s why towards the end of the day, we feel all crazy because we started on the wrong foot. So do not check your email before 7 AM.
Habit 2. 5 AM Jam Sessions. Jam Sessions are when we and teh rest of DYB get things done.
Thanks to Jam Sessions we implement Basecamp2, we implement TSheets, we implement a new estimate program. Whether it’s Estimated Rocket, or PEP. We finish up some proposals or write up some estimates that we need to close out So whatever it is in the JEM session is we get things done. And the coolest thing about a Jam Session is when you finish, you’ve gotten done your most important project of the day.
So when you come out of that Jam Session 30, 60, 90 minutes later, you feel accomplished. You’ve already crushed it!
And so when you go out into your day, it doesn’t matter all the stuffs that come flying at you. Because you’ve already crushed it, you’ve started the day with the big win of accomplishment.
Here are the 7 steps to a proper Jam Session.
Step 1. Schedule it 5 AM
Step 2. Decide what project you are going to work on ahead of time. Don’t schedule your Jam Session and then roll up with your coffee and think, “what should I do?”.
You want to know ahead of time what it’s going to be. So maybe it is your production calendar, maybe it’s finishing up some proposal. Maybe it’s implementing some new tech system on your business.
Step 3 for proper Jem session- Solitude.
Now if this is in the morning, this is going to be pretty easy, it should be pretty easy right, at 5 AM.
That’s the great wonderful thing about it is the world is not awake yet. So you are getting ahead while everybody else is sleeping in. That’s what makes you not average.
Don’t be average. Now if you are scheduling an additional Jam Session in the afternoon, this is where solitude is very important.
Step 4 for proper Jem Session, airplane mode.
You are definitely going to need airplane mode if you are scheduling an additional Jem session in the afternoon. Also turn it on in the morning.
Step 5 and this is a powerful psychological scarcity focus-trigger for me and many others and it will be for you too. And that’s to have a countdown timer. It’s so important.
I like to use an iPad Mini. Maybe the regular iPods do it too. I’ve had a mini for so long. But it has the red circle that gets larger as your time goes down.
As you work away in your Jem Session, if you have a project you are working on, your mind sometimes will wander. You will look and you’ll see, I have 13 minutes left, right back to work right.
It’s powerful for helping you stay focus and get this thing done.
Step 6 is listening to Mozart for the Mind. I have been using this CD for maybe eight years now, and it’s just awesome, over and over and over.
It takes your left hemisphere and your right hemisphere and it brings them into harmony so that you have organization and creativity and flow and man you just get things done.
Step 7 is to keep a notepad and pen with you.
As you focus on your Jam Session, things are going to come to mind that you hadn’t thought about.
Return Bob’s call, take out the trash, just wild things. I don’t know what, it will come to mind.
You don’t go do them now. No. You just capture them on a pen and paper, just write them down. Then after your Jam Session, we go through and we process those.
Quick Recap for a proper Jam Session,
Schedule it, decide what’s the project is going to be ahead of time. You must be in solitude, on airplane mode, with a countdown timer, listen to Mozart for the Mind, and then capture the things that come to your mind during the Jem session on a notepad and pen.
So that’s’ habit number 2. Now there’s a secret to getting up early whether 4, 4:30, sometimes I get up at 3. Because I want it really bad. I didn’t want the average any more.
I don’t want the struggle anymore. I want more opportunities, more options, and a better life for my family.
So the secret to getting up early. Is to go to bed early.
I know it sounds funny, but it’s tough. We want to watch the latest TV show, reality shows and maybe the news. Maybe we want to watch the latest 3-day news crisis cycle.
I don’t know what is on this 3-day crisis cycle. But they’ll have another one in 3 more days. So I wouldn’t pay any attention to that. How can you get into bed by 9 PM?
No TV at night. In fact, we cancel our cable years ago and that’s one of the best things we have ever done. Read, spend time with the family. We like play board game and then maybe read and your brain settles down and relaxes and you get to bed early so that at some point you might not even need an alarm clock to get up at 4, 4:30 or even if it’s a quarter to five.
Quarter to five is still awesome. Hit that coffee, get into your Jam Session.
Do these 5 Time Management Habits. Implement them in your life, they will help you to hit one million peacefully.
