EP103: Jason Paris: Breaking $10 Million
Introduction:
Today’s guest is an entrepreneurial force from MN (the silicon valley of painting.)
He started with a student painting franchise in college and then started his own painting business after graduating with an Economics degree.
And it grew fast, and his quick growth led him to found a holdings company with 4 of his best friends where they now make investments in other painting companies around the nation as well as investing in multifamily real estate.
His job title reads ‘synergy and memes’ and he serves as an active board member at Aleph, his holding company and a volunteer board member at the PCA.
And as quick aside, I first joined the PCA which was called the PDCA 26 years ago, and he’s been instrumental in the turnaround that has happened with the PCA.
But beyond business he is interested in
- realizing human potential through ultra endurance races,
- founding family legacy by making family meetings cool again,
- and conquering the fear of mammon, which we’ll need to unpack for everybody, by building assets in the trades and volunteering a the PCA.
Quite simply, he embodies innovation, leadership and commitment to making a positive impact.
A few of the topics we cover in this episode are
- Keys to Paris Painting breaking the $10M mark
- Investing in painting businesses. What is Aleph?
- Ultra endurance races
- Heath regiments – Breakfast smoothies, cold tub, etc.
- Current bible reading
- Current thesis on how to improve the painting industry.

What happened.
00:00.10
Mr_ Jason Paris
So there I was Steve there I was about to enter mile 81 of one hundred mile race and the race organizers are saying you need to refill your water bottles. Let me refill your waterballs I’m like no I’m fine and like okay and so I’m walking through the no you need sir let me let me just let me fill that waterball for you. And I am looking at them I’m not saying anything I look at my hands at this point in the race. My hands are a little bit swollen and it just dawns on me I am made of water. My whole body is water I look at them I look at myself I’m like why would I need water when I am water and so I go through the aid station without filling up my water bottles. But five miles later I realize oh no I just made a very bad mistake. Ah I am made of water I also need to drink water because I am sweating water and that’s what happened when I started that final lap.
00:45.68
dybsteve
Ah, ah shit.
00:52.84
dybsteve
All the final labs. So some hallucinations how how far were you into it at this point. Okay.
00:57.77
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yeah, so was that it was. They’re about Twenty mile loops so was about Eight mile 8081 and you know there’s 3 types of hallucinations that I experienced one was you know, just seeing images that aren’t there so typically a face or or ah or like a Gnome or something.
01:09.16
dybsteve
You.
01:15.90
Mr_ Jason Paris
The more freaky freaky one is when you see movement that isn’t there. So this is kind of what they call the witching hour between 2 and 4 am ah the catholics back in the middle meieval days used to call it the witching hour because it’s when ah the spirit world and the physical world are closest to each other and so it outlaw activities.
01:29.51
dybsteve
In health.
01:33.11
Mr_ Jason Paris
In that time but 2 to 4 a m things get really weird once you’ve been up for you know for over 24 hours and I see movement that isn’t there and the third one is the logic starts to fall apart. You say I don’t need water because I am water ah my my left knee was experiencing a lot of pain as you can imagine.
01:51.40
dybsteve
Ah.
01:51.70
Mr_ Jason Paris
And I had a blister on my right foot and in my head The logic tree said if I stomp on my blister hard enough the pain from my left knee will be Overridden and won’t hurt anymore so between turning down water stomping on a blister to have the pain overcome my knee pain.
01:56.26
dybsteve
Hope. Oh.
02:09.97
Mr_ Jason Paris
Those are some of the like logical hallucinations that I started to go through.
02:12.90
dybsteve
Ah, oh like could that is ah that’s wild this put him mildly a hundred mile or my goodness. Ah well again.
02:20.50
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yeah, so that that that’s the final lap of ah of a hundred mile or yeah.
02:27.12
Mr_ Jason Paris
I think yeah like that plans to go do it again in about twenty weeks so getting ready.
02:27.44
dybsteve
Well done congrats on that that’s remarkable. Yeah, so okay, all right, all right right on but for you too far. Hello welcome to the doyb podcast today’s guest is an entrepreneurial force from Minnesota. Ah, the Silicon Valley of painting. He started a student painting franchise excuse me started with the student painting franchise back in college and then started his own painting business after graduating with an economics degree and it grew fast.
02:46.67
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yeah.
03:01.36
dybsteve
And his quick growth led to him founding a holdings company with 4 of his best friends where they now make investments in other painting companies around the nation as well as investing in multifamily real estate his job title reads synergy and memes and he serves as an active board member of elf. His holding company and a volunteer board member at the Pca now quick aside I first joined the pca back when it was called pdca when I was 19 I think this was 1998 I’m 45 so maybe some fact checkers can do the math for us there and I cannot emphasize that. Change and if it’s okay to say turnaround that has happened in the pca sense back when when I first started it is simply remarkable and a lot of that is Jason’s fault so thank you for that? Yeah, absolutely It’s inspiring like I’m just.
03:51.73
Mr_ Jason Paris
Place them. Yeah, appreciate that.
03:57.34
dybsteve
You know, red diging in I’ve kind of taken a hiatus for a few years and I’m just really impressed. Absolutely beyond business. He’s interested in realizing human potential through ultra endurance races as we just heard there in the opening. He’s finding. Family legacies by making family meetings. Cool again and conquering the fear of memon which we’ll need to unpack for everybody by building assets in the trades and volunteering at the Pca quite simply he embodies innovation leadership and commitment to making a positive impact. Jason Perris welcome back to the show. My friend.
04:34.65
Mr_ Jason Paris
What an intro. Wow. Amazing! Thank you Steve great to be back. it’s been ah it’s been five years I think since thousands but you were ah let me think I think you you were maybe the second or third podcast they ever did back in the day and our I know if you know remember this but the title of our podcast.
04:41.75
dybsteve
Yeah, yeah.
04:50.26
dybsteve
Toya.
04:54.65
Mr_ Jason Paris
Ah, was 31 year old millennial $3000000 crushing millennial stereotypes or something like that. Um I bungled it I’m sure but it’s something like 3 3 million 31 years old crushing millennial stereotypes at first kind of hopped on the scene and now I’m a middle aged gray haired old dude.
05:00.18
dybsteve
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:13.10
dybsteve
And welcome to the club. Ah yeah.
05:14.45
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yeah, and I both have certainly age 5 years There’s no question about that and no, it’s great to be back. You do an awesome podcast and I’ve certainly noticed your your content reinvigoration lately here and I think it’s great that people get to see and hear you even more. Because I’m I’m familiar with the proxy you put out and they’re worth promotion.
05:33.85
dybsteve
Awesome! Thank you I appreciate that let’s let’s kick it off with the ah low hanging fruit if you will what are some keys fundamentals for Paris painting breaking wait for it 10000000
05:45.67
Mr_ Jason Paris
Oh great question. So I saw somebody do a posted their day. It said 8 figures is the new 7 figures and I thought that was pretty clever. You know I say one of the keys has been inflation right? It’s been a great 5 year period of inflationary.
05:46.70
dybsteve
Mark.
05:55.71
dybsteve
Um, peace.
06:04.22
Mr_ Jason Paris
Monetary policy and and the dollars just naturally grow themselves. No um yeah.
06:08.72
dybsteve
Well I was gonna jump in and say I forgot to admit, humble you know, like first thing you do is give credit to outside resources rather than I work so hard.
06:18.39
Mr_ Jason Paris
To give credit to our federal reserve which is neither federal nor is it a reserve. Ah they have an innate and innate policy of quantitative easing as of late and that’s the beautiful thing about our system is ah.
06:27.64
dybsteve
With Fred Lundy
06:33.00
Mr_ Jason Paris
The federal system will never run out of money because they can always print more money and they’ve certainly tested those limits but you know keys from when we last spoke Steve you know I’d say it’s really I would say when we spoke was probably the peak of my personal output driving results and that’s where.
06:40.12
dybsteve
It.
06:52.69
Mr_ Jason Paris
You know I certainly have not gotten 3 times more productive I probably work. You know a tenth of what I used to maybe a fifth of what I used to and so it’s not like ah I have a secret hack of how 1 person does magical things and you and I were joking a little bit before the podcast of people are always looking for like. The super secrets that people have and they think that you know the super secret of use a blue pen and this will change your life and then people say I knew it I knew there was a secret. The secret was not working hard or empowering others or having a clear vision or having a healthy culture and you know engaging in partnerships with the foundation of. Trust.
07:13.23
dybsteve
You.
07:31.20
Mr_ Jason Paris
It’s using a blue pen. That’s that’s what they’re doing but I woulds say ruin the secret you know of how crossing ti eight figure Mark for us. We’ve done it relatively quickly. So this is not something that’s taken decades or even generations to build be really and empowering a team of people that has unified vision and the foundation of that is trust.
07:34.22
dybsteve
Ah.
07:48.90
Mr_ Jason Paris
And trust is a result of the culture and the character of everyone that comes on board but it’s not yeah, it’s not like I have done anything amazing and gotten 3 times more productive.
07:58.31
dybsteve
So we make a big point and do I be to lean in and in it’s either lean in and staffing up or lean in and generating leads. What obviously you guys lean into both right? So I liken it to a skier going downhill. You know you’re leaning left.
08:13.69
Mr_ Jason Paris
But.
08:16.36
dybsteve
Leading right? and so you guys just bobbing back and forth what you just keep leaning how what are some keys for you to generate to build your team like have you been finding them right leads for finding team and then also leads for customers because that’s that’s fast right? that you’re.
08:23.70
Mr_ Jason Paris
Now. Yeah.
08:32.26
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yeah, sort on the on the team side. Ah you know it’s not a very fun answer but it’s networking referrals so most of so my my core partners and I there’s 5 of us we all went to college together 3 of us lived together.
08:36.87
dybsteve
Me.
08:46.10
Mr_ Jason Paris
And ah we called it a I know it’s either a discipleship house or a fellowship house. We never could decide and I think that was the problem we had but we lived together in college for a year and most of us know each other and then like people attract like people and we we kind of struck gold with our network of friend groups we have here. So we start with that.
09:00.60
dybsteve
The name.
09:04.37
Mr_ Jason Paris
As you grow that is not something that scales right? So that only goes so far and as you grow your org chart. There’s 2 things that I always think about we’re trying to balance and it’s ah and it’s about your risk tolerance. The first item of risk tolerance is what is the person’s competency to do the role that they’re being asked to do. Enter into so let’s say you have a new opening in your org chart you can hire someone who’s done that before or you can hire someone who has not done that before but you think they can right? and there’s a certain percentage Mark that you’d want to hit depending on your risk tolerance of how much of your org chart. Are you asking people to do new things or things that they’ve proven. They can do.
09:30.95
dybsteve
You know.
09:41.34
Mr_ Jason Paris
The second item is culture someone that is proven that they’re within the culture or someone that you think is going to be in the culture and you’re going to start to see those are the tradeoffs oftentimes I’ll fit right? So let’s say you have somewhere you say I know they can do this I know they fit the culture I know they fit the culture but I don’t know if they can do this I think if they can right? So I’m might promote them or say hey I I don’t.
09:48.84
dybsteve
And it.
09:55.91
dybsteve
And then.
09:59.43
Mr_ Jason Paris
We have too many people we’re asking to step into new roles. Some go to the outside network I recruit somebody who has this competency and has proven that they can get the results but I’m taking a bit of a a leap of faith on if they’re gonna fit the culture right? and you’re you’re balancing those 2 items as you grow grow and scale. The second item was leads and I’ll just say.
10:13.15
dybsteve
Um, and.
10:18.96
Mr_ Jason Paris
You know we grew Paris painting and by far the biggest boom of trades that I think we’ll ever see. Ah, you know really ramped up with the the Biden Bucks and the covid boom or the last couple years there but fundamentally you know I’ve heard heard people say it’s so hard to find.
10:27.65
dybsteve
Oh yeah.
10:36.71
Mr_ Jason Paris
Ah, houses to paint clients to paint for. There is a much louder scream coming from the clients who are saying I cannot find a professional painting company for the life of me and it’s just that belief that we have internally that I think drives some of our results that there is way more demand than supply for professional.
10:45.51
dybsteve
You know.
10:55.74
Mr_ Jason Paris
Home services and painting and that is not an an element of who is going to get the job. It’s really about how well can we execute our process. How ah can we execute our business system to drive the results that we want. It’s more of an internal focus of operations than saying what is the market going to give us. We’re not given anything.
11:11.93
dybsteve
Um, right on comes back to Beliefs habits back to culture real quick So we hire for character and and and what what are you doing to cultivate your culture.
11:15.27
Mr_ Jason Paris
We’re out there and we’re earning it.
11:27.68
Mr_ Jason Paris
So there’s rhythms you want to set into so having a very clear foundation. You know whether that’s in your personal life or your organizational life That’s where all starts from if there’s not a firm foundation. Ah, you’re have a lot of challenging you know, dissenting opinions and dissenting voices and challenging winds that try and push you off of that and if you’re not rock solid in that. It’s hard to build up. It’s just hard to build up so it’s certainly worth taking the time whether it’s a multi-day retreat or just decades of life wisdom to say what are we firmly rooted in in our culture that are non-negotiables right? and that that helps that helps drive your your hiring that helps drive the rhythms. You want to enact or put in place into your company. Ah, most of these things are not magical. They’re just doing it. But I think where most people get tripped up is have you done the hard work to know what can be written in stone There’s some things you write in sand some things you write in stone. Some things you write on paper but your your core beliefs your core objectives for the company. Value statements those are things that do not change from there. You hire for them. You put in weekly monthly quarterly annual fun things. Ah these are all essentially reminders of what we believe and again this translates to the personal life as well as your organizational life.
12:25.64
dybsteve
Who.
12:43.00
Mr_ Jason Paris
People are not good at remembering what they want to do I would say I am not good at remembering what I want to do right? I’m not good or I have to be reminded constantly I’m like oh yeah, this is what I want because my innate my natural human tendency is to do things I don’t want to do and the hard part about this organization is that’s made up of people.
12:52.50
dybsteve
Um, you.
12:59.64
Mr_ Jason Paris
And maybe people want of like kind of probably like me right? who will naturally drift towards chaos in their life and they just we all need reminders for what is this organization about what are we trying to do ah you know the the universe is trying to push us towards entropy and chaos and not doing what our core values are.
13:10.99
dybsteve
Um, you know.
13:14.13
dybsteve
I.
13:18.11
Mr_ Jason Paris
And how do we stand firm against that it takes reminders so hiring for it weekly rhythm monthly rhythms core rhythms annual rhythms. There’s no secret sauce. It’s doing the hard work from the beginning so our core values engaged accountable exceptional grateful and it’s kind of in that order.
13:19.30
dybsteve
In Egypt.
13:25.92
dybsteve
Right on. Can you share some of your non-negotiables.
13:34.63
dybsteve
You know.
13:36.64
Mr_ Jason Paris
Right? So you have to be engaged into your role to even exist if you’re not going to get engaged. It’s not going to work out once you’re engaged you now have the ability to become accountable accountable to your role in cowablell to your performance accountable to everyone that relies on you whether it’s your coworkers whether it’s your clients.
13:42.90
dybsteve
My.
13:55.87
Mr_ Jason Paris
Whether it’s the the labor force you interact with or even the shareholders of the company engaged accountable once you’re allowed to be accountable. We want to be exceptional, right? We all have these choices in life of do I want to get by or I want to fulfill the full purpose I’ve been given and that’s just the ethos of let’s strive to be exceptional. And exceptional can mean different things to different people. But it’s that fundamental drive culture ethos of settling versus becoming all you were called to be and then there’s always a foundation of gratefulness I think this has certainly helped us in the trades as we’ve grown because we’ve all been to the paint store. We’ve all met that. That painter who thinks they are god’s gift to humanity and that does not stay inside their heart that that gets out pretty clearly everyone interacts with them and just having that humility in that Grace goes a long way in this industry because it’s just not very common. Also.
14:41.39
dybsteve
Um, yeah, and.
14:52.14
Mr_ Jason Paris
And experience business success. How can you differentiate yourself from who you are and who the business is a dobtail this off real quick to another concept which is you are not your business. You are someone that runs a business or owns a business or operates in a business just because the business is doing well does not mean that you are a rockstar means that the business is doing well.
14:54.84
dybsteve
And.
15:11.16
Mr_ Jason Paris
That’s all that it means right? So humble down this little bit on the flip side. Let’s say you had a bad day. A bad week. A bad quarter. You’ve got some clients who are upset with you. You’ve got some employees that are not very happy that are turning over your van broke down something happened. The business is having a tough time right now right.
15:12.42
dybsteve
Um, and she.
15:29.66
Mr_ Jason Paris
That doesn’t mean that you are bad right? So just I said just like I said humble yourself I’d say pick yourself up a little bit right? You’re still you the company is not doing well today but that doesn’t mean that you are bad might mean that you’re not running the company. Well let’s reflect on that. Let’s get to the roots but don’t let that be your identity of who you are.
15:33.58
dybsteve
No no.
15:42.11
dybsteve
You.
15:48.70
Mr_ Jason Paris
So humble yourself when the company’s doing well pick yourself up when the company’s not doing well.
15:48.20
dybsteve
Right on. That’s awesome. Let’s get into the holies company if we shall if we can So what is elf what is elf mean? Yeah, what makes you guy so special.
15:57.15
Mr_ Jason Paris
Sure sure. Yeah, so so I I like to pronounce it all off because I like to say it’s all of us together now the original translation the original pronunciation I have no idea it’s probably like ha.
16:06.99
dybsteve
Thank you? okay.
16:13.67
dybsteve
Um, he had. Yeah yeah.
16:16.12
Mr_ Jason Paris
Who knows how it’s and early pronounce I say all of because it’s all of us together. But you know like I said there was 4 really close friends of mine. We came together and all is just the first letter of the hebrew alphabet. It was never anything when we founded it that it was going to be an outward facingcing symbol or brand. But here we are today. Ah, it means a lot of different things. A lot of different people right? So the strength of the ox the covering of the father. We’ve really lashed onto that ox symbol which is the pictogram all bit and we like to view ourselves as partners. So we make investments to other painting companies that prefer to yoke up with our partners and plow the fields together.
16:40.19
dybsteve
Blood off.
16:50.10
dybsteve
E.
16:52.15
Mr_ Jason Paris
And so there’s whole. There’s this whole meta-p picture people have heard me talk about the painting industry as being the wild west what happens to the wild west eventually gets settled right? 1 way gets settled is you’ve got the pioneers who are cowboys and you have to be a cowboy to survive in the wild west but they begin to plow the fields and create these little towns of harvest.
16:59.27
dybsteve
Love one.
17:11.43
Mr_ Jason Paris
And the beautiful thing is is you have 1 ox that’s pluging a field when it yokes up with another Ox it doesn’t pull double its weight it pulls 4 times its weight and just the synergy that can happen when you’re yoking up together with other people. Ah yeah, fundamentally off holdings we come in as as partners into companies. Are niches that were very active partners and so we like to take very active roles in the businesses. Um, but that’s just a little bit about all holdings. We Also do investments in multifamily real estate so participating in buying land developing the land doing the build and ultimately holding that as an asset.
17:30.70
dybsteve
I Don’t know.
17:44.19
dybsteve
So for somebody who might be interested. But however you know has a fear or you know some scarcity says well my goodness give up part of my business like I can’t do that I’ve worked too hard to get here I’ve got my family and we’re kind of doing we’re doing well now I over’re seven fifty turned a million million a half or somewhere you know.
17:57.43
Mr_ Jason Paris
For sure.
18:04.22
dybsteve
Um, what is what is the benefit for them to consider this opportunity.
18:07.92
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yeah, it really has to it starts with Where do you want to go and I would say we’re all foldings is not a great fit is someone that’s at that million Dollar Mark $2000000 $3000000 mark they’re very happy where they are and they want to continue doing what they’re doing for a long time and that is a beautiful thing and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s just not We’re not interested in partnering with those people what you have there is called the lifestyle model and it’s again, it’s a beautiful thing I I like to call it the dentist model right? and so dentists make great money right? They make 3 40500 grand a year they oftentimes don’t work that hard right? They have their suzy’s making all the reception calls.
18:26.27
dybsteve
You the.
18:36.77
dybsteve
Um, night.
18:44.83
Mr_ Jason Paris
They walk in. They’re like hey Johnny how’s that cleaning lookup you you missed you missed the cavity over there but they are the founder. The owner the loan that ultimately runs it if they stop showing up. It wouldn’t continue to run itself. There’s these things that they do but they have a very very nice job and at the end of the day.
18:56.92
dybsteve
1
19:02.68
Mr_ Jason Paris
I’m a hop back to the painting company at the end of the day was time to shut it all down the hope is that one of their child wants to run that company so take on their job or that one of their employees who’s a key employee will now take on that job as well, right? So you’re kind of banking on someone has to take on that role for us continue to run into operate.
19:14.11
dybsteve
Shake the hand.
19:20.68
Mr_ Jason Paris
Or maybe you sell your equipment sell your leads for the first season. The companies that we’re interested in partnering with wanted to turn it into a true asset right? That’s both stable and passive income and so we got know continue to grow and scale for sure. But most importantly, stabilize to do that is very hard that is ah.
19:29.65
dybsteve
For.
19:40.15
Mr_ Jason Paris
I haven’t met many companies if any in the painting business that achieved that result right? It’s a very difficult thing to achieve I did not achieve that on my own and so people are verympressed with Paris painting and and I’ve been kind of out there in the ethos and they want to be very clear I took on partners for Paris pain to achieve that that is.
19:44.11
dybsteve
For many.
19:56.25
dybsteve
In here health.
19:59.20
Mr_ Jason Paris
Typically how businesses get built here in America but yeah, it come down to what do you want to achieve is it something that you believe you can achieve on your own. You’d be 1 of the first you’d be pretty rare to achieve that on your own. But if even if you can. It’s the second question is what’s a likelihood that’s going to happen.
20:10.66
dybsteve
In hunt.
20:18.23
Mr_ Jason Paris
And these are kind of the 3 edges of my mind that I go toever I take on a partner whether it’s in the painting businesses or even in real estate as a good example right? Do I believe I can do it. What’s the likelihood I can do it is that likely li higher if I take on someone who’s done it recently and had great had big success there and now wants to have an active interest in my company. The third would be quality of life.
20:24.15
dybsteve
No.
20:38.32
Mr_ Jason Paris
So maybe I could build these apartments on my own. Ah maybe it’s a fifty fifty chance that they go well and I don’t do something stupid because I’m going to learn what I don’t know. Ah, but do I want to do that in my life right? My family want to participate in that and this is just I’m just just realizing I’m talking myself through the decision matrix of.
20:44.36
dybsteve
Woman.
20:56.87
Mr_ Jason Paris
When I started building these multifamily apartments. That’s not something I have any desire to do on my own I want to do that with partners and that’s kind of the decision tree of if you’re a painting company that’s kind of around that $1000000 Mark looking to grow have a desire to build a stable asset it accompany the question would be do you want to do that on your own. Do you think you can do that on your own on your own.
21:01.15
dybsteve
9
21:12.42
dybsteve
Um, so what would that look like to them if you’re vision casting and just kind of throwing up the potential you know on ah on a dry board. So okay, we’re here at a million you’re clearing 2 300000 for yourself. But if we partner up.
21:16.70
Mr_ Jason Paris
Or would you rather do that with partners. That’s a fundamental question.
21:29.68
Mr_ Jason Paris
Turf.
21:31.95
dybsteve
Um, five ten five years down the road or so it could look like what.
21:34.69
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yeah, well I would just say as an investor I’m not really excited about the company staying around that 1 to $3000000 Mark because that is what I would call a bad investment I would not advise any investor to make an investment in a painting company is doing less than three million bucks
21:49.90
dybsteve
Notice.
21:52.10
Mr_ Jason Paris
What happens when Johnny doesn’t want to run that business anymore. It stops producing profit for the investors right? So we want to continue to grow this company and scale. It. So it has a true org chart that has some stability in place. So that now you’ve actually invested in something that is stable. You want a partner if you’re looking to take on a partner take an on partner. That’s ah, a smart investor. Not a bad investor a wise investor will turn this into an asset with you. Let’s say you’re running a million dollar business the business clears Fifteen twenty percent of profit and then you make a little comp on top of that. So maybe it’s a $300000 wage. You’re currently making the goal would be.
22:26.56
dybsteve
Um, you.
22:27.72
Mr_ Jason Paris
You know, let’s get that race to to five million bucks right so we get to 5000000 now let’s say let’s say it’s shooting out I don’t think it’s going to shoot out 20% let’s say it’s shooting out 15% it’s got seven fifty of profit. You don’t own 100% of that ain’t more right? you now own 60% of that you’ve taken a minority partner to help scale you up to that.
22:35.72
dybsteve
You know.
22:46.16
Mr_ Jason Paris
And you actually may not have any more comp in the business that’s up to you and some people view that as a pro or a con if you want all the dollars of compensation. You’d say I want to continue to be the president of this business. What I found with myself and others is I’m happy to give up compensation not be the president of a $10000000 company a $5000000 company
22:49.11
dybsteve
Um, none.
22:55.31
dybsteve
No.
23:05.23
Mr_ Jason Paris
Ah, somebody else can can can worry about that I’ll take my investments and reinvest those into other investments. Ah and continue to play that game of capitalism.
23:16.72
dybsteve
Right on what’s um, besides the size of the company. What’s what’s an ideal partner client partner for you like how.
23:22.38
Mr_ Jason Paris
Sure number 1 is shared vision like I said they’ve got a 1 desire to run a business and not have an awesome job and that’s a paradigm that I think is shifting in the industry like that’s kind of people don’t even know what to shoot for right? This idea that you could have more than a really really nice job but you could actually build a business that.
23:34.98
dybsteve
You know.
23:41.53
dybsteve
You see.
23:41.63
Mr_ Jason Paris
Serves you as an asset. Not just as a role that you get to play. That’s a unique and novel paradigm first and first they have to have that and then I’d say the second characteristic could be humility right? There’s a lot of humility in taking on partners. There’s lie humility and saying I don’t know how to do things the best I’m not gonna be the best person at this. Ah. Hey I’d like you to lean in Mr. Partner and and hire and develop a sales team I I could do that but I’m actually humble enough to know that I can’t do that and I want you guys to do that instead that requires humility. Ah I’d say that those are 2 fundamental things shared vision.
24:06.46
dybsteve
No.
24:15.64
dybsteve
And yeah, so it’s interesting, very similar to those who come into Duib shared vision. They have to what we would say is coachable. They need to be coachable you know and then I think something touched on earlier was just a burning desire to grow. Ah the drive the white hot fire.
24:16.37
Mr_ Jason Paris
Character characteristic of humility.
24:23.55
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yeah.
24:33.17
dybsteve
Ah, as brown would say you got to be hungry. You know? Um, yeah.
24:33.22
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yeah, who I want to build an asset together right? because if you’re looking to have a ah nice chill 2 $3000000 company ah where you get to play part time sales rep and president.
24:41.89
dybsteve
And then.
24:48.41
Mr_ Jason Paris
I’m happy for you I’d love to I’d love to help you but as an investor I’m not super excited about investing in that company. We got to grow this to some level of stability and you have to want that too. There’s no right or wrong in these scenarios. It’s just.
24:53.52
dybsteve
Me.
25:05.72
Mr_ Jason Paris
And it’s not even that they’re a bad partner for us. It’s just there’s no appetite for us to invest in something like that.
25:11.19
dybsteve
Well I do ah just quick aside one like you know that are let listeners of viewers know that we’ve had members from Duib go ahead and partner with you and even a client and so far it’s been fantastic and so you know the right goals alignment vision alignment and.
25:20.60
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yes.
25:27.16
Mr_ Jason Paris
It goes both ways with us too. Right’ve, we’ve talked to plenty of painting contractors where the answer is. We’re not quite ready to invest in this business. But I do believe you need a coach because everybody I don’t care what this fear of life is is if it’s if it’s business if it’s fitness.
25:27.70
dybsteve
Win Wins all the way around. So.
25:38.65
dybsteve
And hourly.
25:46.83
Mr_ Jason Paris
If it’s diet people perform better with a coach and I’ve certainly you know have no no calls over for playing people over to dy b and just said you should definitely work with Steve Until you’re at a point where that shared vision makes a lot of sense with all of so it goes both ways I appreciate you saying that.
25:53.00
dybsteve
A.
26:03.77
dybsteve
Thank you appreciate you as well. Let’s circle back to the entry story of the the race and what’s ah so what’s up with the ultratra endurance races did goggins kick that off for you or where did ah that inspiration.
26:19.80
Mr_ Jason Paris
This is a little yeah goggins is awesome I Think he’s great. This is a pre-goggins. Ah, it’s a cool question. Cool story. It’s probably a little over over I’d say it say it too much but it does it just it’s hit me so true to the core of who I am and I kind of spent a season of life you know, committing myself to the business fully.
26:21.36
dybsteve
Events.
26:28.67
dybsteve
Now.
26:35.78
Mr_ Jason Paris
And neglecting my physical wellness and then I got into like ah I don’t know if I call it egotistical unhuboldt like there’s this time where I was just interested in being jacked and I only lifted weights for hypertrophy and there is nothing wrong with that and I’ve met plenty of people who they think that is a great way for them to realize their potential and they’re treating their body. Well.
26:43.58
dybsteve
Yeah.
26:54.89
dybsteve
Yeah, yeah.
26:54.95
Mr_ Jason Paris
You’re one of them right? So I know you’re getting jacked on that for party for that i’ would just say for me in my heart I was doing it ah to to almost worship myself I was doing it worship myself I was doing it for the validation of others I cared so it it wasn’t coming from a healthy place covered shut the gyms down.
27:02.00
dybsteve
No yeah, no.
27:14.56
Mr_ Jason Paris
I said I guess I’ll start running I started running immediately loved it and now it like it feels very very true to the core of who I am and I really enjoy these ultra endurance races. So I’ve done and I’ve done a full distance iron man I’ve done a fifty mile trail run did a hundred trail mile trail run last fall.
27:19.55
dybsteve
Um, and yeah.
27:32.32
Mr_ Jason Paris
Going back to that same hundred this this fall trying to be a little more competitive as competitive as I can be I’ve got some pretty gold big goals and ambitions for 202049 but it started just because of covid shook our rhythm up and knocked me off of that weightlifting hypertrophy. Ah.
27:35.94
dybsteve
And.
27:43.89
dybsteve
Yeah, no yeah.
27:51.69
dybsteve
No.
27:52.17
Mr_ Jason Paris
And Nwor focused track that I was on they had some good elements to it as well. But I just say at the core was pretty unhealthy for me and it’s got me into something that I just feel lines with something in me, something me just loves it.
28:05.50
dybsteve
That’s awesome. Ah fitness, you know we geek off of that Love fitness. Yeah yeah, love it.
28:07.33
Mr_ Jason Paris
We unit I So right you not actually text quite a bit because I know you’ve been hitting it hard and you getting and you’re getting into all this stuff. But yeah so I cut you off.
28:19.50
dybsteve
That’s okay so yeah, running So I was just thinking about the the trail runs how dangerous are those because you you get going and a lot of times you just you know you think about something you’re going. You’re thinking but you know you could twist an ankle on a root or I’m just thinking through some man.
28:26.56
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yeah, for sure, there’s a lot. Yeah, there’s a couple things you do we I do a lot of ankle Mobility and ankle strength work. But a great thing about trail running it really forces you to be president in the moment and there’s kind of a flow in a zen that really comes with that and you know.
28:36.90
dybsteve
Yeah, yeah.
28:45.49
Mr_ Jason Paris
Of the elements of flow is you need to be doing something that’s challenging that it isn’t automatic and you can’t can’t it’s not like a given that you’re going to succeed and this is and there’s like an inherent and amount of danger that requires your full attention. So like when I’m working in the trails of you know Minnesota it’s not too crazy but I like to go to Alaska quite a bit.
28:54.73
dybsteve
My.
29:01.56
dybsteve
I.
29:03.37
Mr_ Jason Paris
Ah, my family I took the family up there 4 times in a year and and I love running the mountains and there’s a nowith of danger when you’re running up in the mountains and there’s no cell service and you’re you’re trying to you know, hit a new Pr or or hit a strava segment super hard or whatever it may be but that that is like the double edged sword of of flow.
29:20.63
dybsteve
My.
29:22.40
Mr_ Jason Paris
Something that requires your focus and attention has an element of risk or an element of danger to it. It’s like you can’t achieve the fullness in life without a little bit of pushing the envelope.
29:25.36
dybsteve
Yes.
29:32.65
dybsteve
Right? on what? what are some apps that you’re using.
29:38.62
Mr_ Jason Paris
Strava would be the one so strava is like the social network of and people who if it did if it’s not on Strava. It didn’t happen is what the kids like to say that and then I use an app I work with a coach for for running.
29:44.20
dybsteve
Yeah, and and 1 no.
29:52.18
Mr_ Jason Paris
It’s called final Surgeon he and I communicate and he crafts ah a schedule and a plan for me on that.
29:56.13
dybsteve
What is your sleep habit me Yeah, this number yeah congratulations. Yeah, you can.
30:01.00
Mr_ Jason Paris
Ah, so I have a one month old so bad question king so he is this is number 5 Yes, this is my our fifth so we have 5 kids aged eight and under right now. Ah so I’m very grateful to my partners in the office that allow me to.
30:14.81
dybsteve
You.
30:17.90
Mr_ Jason Paris
Take the time needed to to help help support my family and and do all the things I love and enjoy I’ll try of that I mean in the ideal world if the answer is let’s consistent sleep every night I’ll just tell you that does not happen. 1 thing I instituted about a year ago was chilled sleep overnight. So I have this pad on my bed that chills down the temperature to ° and it’s not like not getting cold on it. The thing that I have noticed if I ever go to a Ohio hotel is it’s just it’s it’s less about cooling you down and it’s more about not allowing your body to heat up the mattress.
30:51.21
dybsteve
Yeah, that Chi Pat or newer. Okay and so that’s what we used to. So yeah.
30:53.44
Mr_ Jason Paris
From my from my perspective my opinion. That’s right, Yeah, the the ur ruler thing. Yeah, that’s awesome. Yeah I thought I thought you’d be on that you you and are are both on quite a bit of body hacking things I least to do the sauna before bed. So with that concept of getting your core body temperature low.
31:08.64
dybsteve
And.
31:12.14
Mr_ Jason Paris
You really deep Rem sleep. So it’s a little counterintuitive because you go in the sun out to heat yourself up. But then it forces your body temperature to your body trying and work your temperature down so it’s good to do that before you go to sleep if you jump into a cold tub before you go to sleep then your body’s working to increase your core temperature. It gets a little bit of counter action counterbalance sail there.
31:14.78
dybsteve
Yeah, yeah.
31:25.44
dybsteve
The.
31:31.20
Mr_ Jason Paris
But the big I mean the big secrets of sleep again. They’re not hacks. They’re not tricks. You know you’re kind of chasing those final percentage points when you start cooling down your sleep or maybe getting blackout blinds or you know all those things the the the number 1 hack to sleep is enough volume with consistency.
31:40.31
dybsteve
Yeah, we have we’ve got blank.
31:46.97
dybsteve
Where done right on you hit.
31:48.97
Mr_ Jason Paris
If you can do that you’ve hit 90% of the gains and then you’re chasing that last ten percent which is hard to do with the newborn and it’s kind of like it’s kind of like russian it’s like you’re gambling every night like election new lie. It’s like who’s going to have who’s going to puke tonight who’s going to who’s going to come into my bed crying because they had a bad dream. But five kids. It’s pretty good odds. That’s someone every single night. Yeah, so you’ve probably seen so I’ve been ah, highly start. Oh I had both I had 4 wisdom teeth taken out at once. Ah.
32:08.00
dybsteve
And yeah, so yeah, yeah, oh it’s out about ah diet breakfast smoothies.
32:23.64
dybsteve
Oh for 1 time.
32:26.97
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yeah, it’s all 4 taken out knocked him out I did that my wife started making me smoothies and I’m a man of ah high utilitarianism and so I love efficiency I was like this is super efficient and so now for I even know it 4 years
32:31.32
dybsteve
Um, yeah, and do we have.
32:44.59
dybsteve
Um, there we go.
32:46.50
Mr_ Jason Paris
It’s been in smoothies for breakfast every single day. This is what I had this morning right? Giant jar of of smoothie polish it off. Yeah, just it’s ah it’s ah it’s a nice way to not have decision fatigue keeps you consistent. You know there’s these tight. The the weird the weird things that people say like your buye doesn’t have to work on digesting solid foods for the first half of the day. Some people believe that that that helps a little bit people ask me if you lose weight drinking smoothies I usually drink it because I need a lot of calories coming in. It’s very you can consume. A lot of calories pretty easily something like this as opposed to having to chew that all with your mouth and your jaw so they’re great ways to get all the calories that you need in during a day where you’re doing some some heavier endurance work or for you like yeah I know you’re trying to get jacked and.
33:25.20
dybsteve
Ah.
33:28.26
dybsteve
Right? on. Not so watch Jack so I’ve been underweight but let me just call this now for everyone. Let’s say like Steve’s turned into some mehead. No no, no, not that.
33:40.72
Mr_ Jason Paris
Um, Steve’s on trend Steve is not on trend. He’s very holistic.
33:45.40
dybsteve
But but yeah so I’ve been underweight my whole life like in high school six feet tall one hundred and thirty five pounds you know so for the first time my life I had a trainer. Not my first trainer but the first trainer who said look you need a gram of protein for every pound you want to weigh so I started eating two hundred grams of protein.
33:50.33
Mr_ Jason Paris
This shape.
34:04.21
dybsteve
Ah day and mostly from chicken and sure enough like I finally started to put on Musclesa went oh my goodness. It is possible and so it got excited. You know, got me really inspired and excited and it’s like cool. So I’ve been working on that just to get strong. You know I’ve always been underweight middle life and so that’s where I came from still working.
34:08.22
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yeah, yeah.
34:15.91
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yeah, yeah, especially as you age Steve you know your starting gets to that age where you got make sure that you have that strength and stability. You know.
34:27.39
dybsteve
Yeah, yeah, yeah, especially if we keep buying these £80 bulldogs you know so ah yeah, yeah, it. Ah.
34:32.32
Mr_ Jason Paris
That well, there’s something to that too I just speak on like there’s these very simple equations in life and you know you can chase the final 10% like if you want sleep well get enough volume get consistently if you want to lose weight expend more calories and you eat if you want to gain weight eat more calories and you expend.
34:49.59
dybsteve
Eight four
34:51.48
Mr_ Jason Paris
And it’s like these very simple things that people oftentimes primarily focus on that last ten percent of gains like yeah, that’s great. But I’m going to start with supercharging my bed routine and I’m going to start with like.
34:55.85
dybsteve
And.
35:05.63
dybsteve
Yeah, you you? yeah you you know? Yeah, you’re absolutely right? A lot of people say well Okay, but what else she doing protein.
35:06.14
Mr_ Jason Paris
Taking trend and creatine or whatever it is feel. It’s like no let’s start. Let’s just start with eating more calories than we spend and I think I think let’s just start with that. Let’s do that for 2 years see where we’re at and I bet you’re going get where you want to go.
35:24.52
dybsteve
You know, eating rice sleep right? eating healthy. You know 200 times a day. No but what else like what? what’s what’s what’s what’s trick
35:24.92
Mr_ Jason Paris
Right? that the no this is like an it’s like an Instagram social media thing. Why even think of like ah I mean it’s easy sports athletes performances are just well how more highly visual things so we get to consume.
35:33.94
dybsteve
Me.
35:40.49
Mr_ Jason Paris
And so people are always interested in like what are the weird quirky niche workouts that people are doing ah but there’s just such a power of to like the full body of evidence versus like these tiny little waves that hit up. It’s like well it’s really about consistent effort that’s progressive over a long period of time and like.
35:42.38
dybsteve
I Mean you.
35:51.00
dybsteve
Yeah, you.
35:58.38
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yeah, there’s like that one clip where they’re doing like weird band stuff and like all they like but that is to get like the frog hairs like the last 2% of gains or think about it as like maslow’s hierarchy of needs at the bottom you have volume of exercise then you have like consistency and you have adequate rest and recovery. Ah.
36:02.44
dybsteve
Me you. Even.
36:13.64
dybsteve
Um, um.
36:17.58
Mr_ Jason Paris
And you have good nutrition and then at the top you have hyperbaric chambers people want to start with the hyperbaric Chamber without putting in the rest of it work. It’s like well that’s your foundation like but let’s so there’s something to that That’s deeper. That’s probably a metaphor of business but ah.
36:22.91
dybsteve
Yeah, yeah, walling. Yeah.
36:34.31
Mr_ Jason Paris
Ah, let I’ll let our a lot of viewers connect those dots.
36:36.83
dybsteve
Here you go right on? Well so ah, bible reading. But first we need to circle back to mammon. How do you ah handle the fear of mammon and what is mammon.
36:48.29
Mr_ Jason Paris
So mammon. It’s all those funny words means a lot of things to lot of people Steve people if you look it up. It’s referenced in in the bible sir you cannot serve both god and mammon right? Mammon is oftentimes depicted as money or finances the traps in control that come into there I like to view mammon as. Ah, not just financial shackles but all the shackles that we choose to put on ourselves so there are systems. There are structures that man creates to enslave itself right? So this could be financial is the most common right? We choose to put ourselves. We choose to over consume beyond our needs beyond our means.
37:14.83
dybsteve
No.
37:23.60
dybsteve
You know.
37:27.84
Mr_ Jason Paris
Which puts us in the debt which means that we have to serve that debt before we can serve anything else. We would like to serve right? Maybe the Lord I don’t know or or hedonism or whatever floats your boat right? Whatever people like to serve you can serve whatever you want. Ah, another example, be pride Greed envy. Ah.
37:32.32
dybsteve
That he. No no.
37:46.91
Mr_ Jason Paris
Those these are all things that will shackle us if we allow them to so that we are now serving that spirit and we are not serving what we want to serve and so that’s what mammon means to me conquering the fear of Mammon you know there’s nothing that can combat it better than what you would call the shabbat or sorry this shalom.
37:51.97
dybsteve
You.
38:04.52
dybsteve
In.
38:06.45
Mr_ Jason Paris
The the Shabbat Shabbat’s great too. The shalom which is the peace of God right? And so the peace of God will combat you know that desire of consumerism that will put you in debt that that drives you to spend beyond your means that that envy that that lust ah the lack of humility.
38:21.36
dybsteve
On your.
38:25.49
Mr_ Jason Paris
These are all things that you could serve but you’re not really, you almost naturally want to serve those things and it requires like this constant battle back by using the peace of God in finances will then boil this down to well why do you have conquering the fear of mammon in your whole like.
38:36.64
dybsteve
He like.
38:44.66
Mr_ Jason Paris
Like this document that reminds me every single day week month here. What do I want to do in my life and this is under like the vocational element of my life is conquerran if fear of Mammon why is it in that area. Well let’s boil it down to even just financial. There’s this very simple equation in life where if you can have enough assets.
38:50.90
dybsteve
Move. So.
39:02.37
Mr_ Jason Paris
Not why the liabilities outweigh the liabilities in Life. You have a lot of choices in what you can choose to serve right? and so that’s when we say conquering the fear of Mammon. It’s this Rat Race of consumerism right? This envy this greed this lust. But Also what’s on the other side of the equation. Can we start to build out. This legacy of asset mindedness that everyone can choose to participate in the goal is to have the assets outweighing the liabilities that allow you the decisions of what you choose to serve.
39:23.31
dybsteve
Me.
39:37.13
dybsteve
Right? on right on that’s fantastic. Would you ah would you say that mammon in its most simplest form would be false titles.
39:52.24
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yes, yeah, it’s something that you yeah you are choosing to serve that it sometimes it feels like Mammon does not have power over you unless you give it power right? But once it it doesn’t feel like a choice when you’re in it.
40:12.95
dybsteve
Um, no.
40:13.00
Mr_ Jason Paris
Ah, yeah I think those are all I’m just thinking through what you said I think you’re right I think they’re all false idols that we choose to serve. They’re just not very kind Masters and that’s the unfortunate part is it seems great I would love you know to serve lust to serve greed to serve this.
40:21.61
dybsteve
No.
40:31.57
dybsteve
No.
40:31.65
Mr_ Jason Paris
Consumeristic desire. Ah that sound those are all idols that you could serve in life. They just when they come back at you. They are not kind Masters they actually want to destroy you and this comes down to like a more meta principle.
40:36.97
dybsteve
E.
40:42.59
dybsteve
Um, yeah, no.
40:47.92
Mr_ Jason Paris
Um, fun I Love talking to you about this because I know you and I have very similar paradigms I’ll just say that Satan does not like humanity. He was pretty pissed off at God for giving humanity all the domain and dominion and control that we have not just in the physical world but in the spiritual world and so.
40:55.63
dybsteve
Um.
41:02.11
dybsteve
You are whose ethnic method I know.
41:06.80
Mr_ Jason Paris
The devil is not a fan of you. He he’s pretty pissed off at what god did and he would love to destroy you and you know there’s there’s like not a lot of power that he has over you until you choose to give that and now we’re getting deep right? Get get a bunch of hate mail on Twitter from people. But.
41:15.47
dybsteve
And.
41:22.22
Mr_ Jason Paris
That’s what I believe these are some philosophical principles I know I can talk to you about it pretty openly and and they certainly ah they certainly. There are very very clear lines of truth whether you believe in the reality of it or just want to accept the philosophy of it that impact both our lives and business. So but.
41:26.57
dybsteve
Yeah, absolutely and ah.
41:40.74
dybsteve
No indeed indeed I agree 100% thank you what’s ah what’s what your current bible reading.
41:40.88
Mr_ Jason Paris
Wrap it all in.
41:47.79
Mr_ Jason Paris
Ah, so I cannot hop around here and there um I follow a plan on my bible app kind up like most everyone I was going through romans today and so man I’d say something that I’ve struggled with for a long time is I’m very spiteful.
41:54.55
dybsteve
Me.
42:01.40
dybsteve
Okay.
42:03.80
Mr_ Jason Paris
And yeah, well I think I think that has driven a lot of success in my life too I like to prove people wrong. So whether it’s real or made up sometimes I’ll make up little slights or s spites that people really didn’t mean but you say like I’m goingnna use that to motivate me and and drive me and.
42:13.54
dybsteve
The name.
42:21.29
Mr_ Jason Paris
That’s not coming from a super healthy place. That’s not a very strong foundation to grow from I’ll I’ll acknowledge that if I’ve been working through that there’s this verse in Romans Ah I was reading through day or something on the lines of um, it was like don’t seek revenge. Don’t seek revenge on others ah save that for the lord.
42:38.67
dybsteve
In here.
42:41.40
Mr_ Jason Paris
And it was like this weighty thing of like ah if I have the correct perspective of what the consequences are of um, perceived slights or or injustices towards myself. Ah I would not.
42:58.32
Mr_ Jason Paris
Even if I had an even if I had a negative heart I would not want to seek justice myself because I knew that what was coming was gonna be so much greater and so much more justful right? The thing I thought about when I read this first was um so again. Everyone else can skip this thing but you know what keep talking what I thought about was when Jesus was on the cross and he’s just getting that’s a bad day that’s like he’s getting hamored this has not been good. Ah, he now if I were if I were Jesus watch out for humanity. It’d be a bad day for them. Ah, but instead of.
43:22.56
dybsteve
Yeah, yeah, the flogging leading up.
43:35.38
Mr_ Jason Paris
Seeking revenge in that moment which your script certainly could take Jesus instead cries out and says forgive them for. They know not what they do and I think the reason for that is that Jesus more than anybody obviously ah understood the consequences. The eternal consequences. Ah, that comes from the justice of the father and it’s like if I knew if I truly understood and had ingrained in my heart. The consequences that come from a righteous and justice driven god I would be pleading for mercy for those who have done but done wrong to me. I would not be trying to seek revenge my own I would said’d be pleading to god to say lord I pray for their deliverance because what is coming is real bad and I would not worse that I’m a worst enemy. So I have to continue to work through that in my heart because like I said somebody slights me and.
44:20.75
dybsteve
You.
44:30.22
Mr_ Jason Paris
You know I’m coming back real passive aggressive for like 5 years in a row and I got get I got see ripped that out of my heart. But that’s what I was reading through today I just connected those 2 dots and it actually hit a little through liner thread in my in my heart in my life.
44:32.84
dybsteve
Yeah, yeah.
44:42.84
dybsteve
So I pulled up my notes from my babel study this morning and here’s my main takeaway feelings of being mistreated indicate a focus on self and not on christ.
44:55.60
Mr_ Jason Paris
Dude yeah, you’re not run the same wavelength and sometimes that just happens and there’s a lot of things that just seem to happen in life and and that’s awesome man I Love that you were reading through that this morning and and that’s super cool.
44:57.28
dybsteve
Excuse that. No. Yeah, thank I’m going through a study called ah self-confrontation discipleship bible study. It’s the best bible study I’ve ever been through hands down. In fact, we we bought extra copies to hand out and recommended to clients and members and friends and and everybody self confrontation. Discipleship bible study. It’s those I wish I would have found earlier. You know, yeah indeed and then have you ever done an inductive bible study. Hey. Thank you, thank you? I didn’t either till like 2.
45:26.15
Mr_ Jason Paris
Cool then look that up.
45:36.35
Mr_ Jason Paris
I Don’t know what that word means? no.
45:43.39
dybsteve
Three weeks ago my pastor said hey Steve would you like to do an inductive bible study with me have you ever done an inductive bible study I said I don’t believe so and so there’s an actual bible called the inductive study bible and I’m just getting started so I don’t know the process but it’s it’s a deep dive into the context of what’s gu on which I love because it’s like I want all the facts. Okay.
45:48.79
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yeah.
45:59.49
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yeah.
46:03.36
dybsteve
Want your feelings I don’t I don’t I don’t I don’t want something taken out of context like I want the whole story and so is what the inductive study appears to be so I’m excited to get into that as well. But ah.
46:06.75
Mr_ Jason Paris
Yeah.
46:14.42
Mr_ Jason Paris
There’s a very deep. Well it’s ah it’s fun when there’s a deep deep. Well it’s like the more you dig the more water there is and that’s one of the fun things and again whether you view the bible as a historical document that was inspired by people that were on mushrooms or despite inspired by the spirit of God. You know it. It is pretty cool how well it holds up to any any kind of philosophical digging. It’s a deep Well the deeper you dig the more water there is.
46:32.57
dybsteve
Yeah, yep, Absolutely absolutely what your current theses on how to improve the painting industry.
46:46.66
Mr_ Jason Paris
Okay, so I do not make a lot of friends in the vaing world sometimes because I have not maybe super. There’s like a lot of hard truths I think people need to hear and one is that most of you all should not be running businesses right? ah.
46:56.38
dybsteve
Yet. A.
47:04.12
Mr_ Jason Paris
The painting industry is full of people that should not be running businesses and this is a circular issue I think a lot of people are forced to start companies. So the challenge here is there are not good businesses in place if there were people would not be leaving them to start their own businesses.
47:19.50
dybsteve
1
47:22.12
Mr_ Jason Paris
But if you’re good at if you’re a good painter and you want like Upward mobility in your life. You want to realize your potential you want to drive and see all that you’re made to be very very very unlikely. You find that working for anybody else in painting right? There’s not like large organizational structures where you can have upward Mobility be given like responsibilities.
47:33.46
dybsteve
15
47:42.10
Mr_ Jason Paris
Grow as a person ah be around a good culture have a clear job description. That’s like even have stability in your life I mean this is like the the people are being driven away from working at painting companies to where they are almost forced to start their own business right? And then they’re not really.
47:55.55
dybsteve
E.
48:01.30
Mr_ Jason Paris
They should not be running a business. They would be a great midlevel manager at a painting company but forced to start their old business which means that they’re not a great lead.. They’re not good at you know pulling the whole things and then they hire people and guess what they’re not getting a great experience either. So they start on their own This is like death spiral that’s happening. Ah that is not good and I think The. It’s like this slow change that happens of we just need more professional business entrepreneurs and I always hear. Yeah I’ve heard it scream for a long time I don’t want to you know poo-poo it too much but there’s no good painters out there. There’s no paint I can’t Act. Only.
48:24.77
dybsteve
Here.
48:36.25
Mr_ Jason Paris
Have more painters I’d be more successful in business. It’s like well you know that sounds like it’s a problem. You know what entrepreneurs do they solve problems. You are complaining you ah you have no business running a business sounds harsh is what it is I would just say I’ve met painting companies and they will they will figure out how to hire 20 painters this year
48:53.89
dybsteve
Well.
48:55.93
Mr_ Jason Paris
You’re telling you you can’t find 2 the reason you can’t find painters right now is because you’ve maxed out of your internal network or the things that you’ve tried to do with limited resources. You’re not committing the resources. You’re not doing their problem solved the minute we drop a 100000 more painters into this market There’s going to be a scream. From all the business owners saying is impossible to teach anyone how to do bids and no one else can sell like I can I can’t figure it. It’s not impossible I need and like that’s where I get like a little frustrated with some of the larger players of the industry where bureaucracies will start initiatives.
49:17.15
dybsteve
The.
49:27.12
dybsteve
Um, have.
49:33.17
Mr_ Jason Paris
Entrepreneurs Solve problems and I think the way that you solve this industry is you empower entrepreneurs to solve problems. You don’t try and create initiatives that solve problems for business owners that can’t solve things in this case I don’t think that’s that’s the answer. So I think it’s driving more business talent in this industry.
49:34.93
dybsteve
Ah, you have.
49:38.46
dybsteve
Well.
49:44.22
dybsteve
Are what.
49:52.55
Mr_ Jason Paris
I Think that’s part of it I think all if is going to be a part of that by proving that you can build equity in the painting industry right? Not a lot of great. Not ah, not a lot of Mbos are getting in saying I want to start a painting company right now but you what they are doing. They are starting breweries. They’re starting farms. Ah.
50:00.90
dybsteve
Um, ah.
50:04.60
dybsteve
Right? It’s not common.
50:11.39
Mr_ Jason Paris
They’re starting dental practices accounting practice I don’t know they’re starting things that have equity in them because the best business minds in this country are not interested in earning an income. They’re interested in gaining equity specificallyly one that can have stable and passive income for the rest of their life right and be used to have this this scenario where people would start breweries.
50:21.10
dybsteve
No no.
50:30.34
dybsteve
You yeah.
50:31.10
Mr_ Jason Paris
Because they like to drink they want’t drinking. Why wouldn’t I start a brewery you know who starts painting companies right now people love fainting I wouldn’t they they love fainting Mbas are starting breweries because they create equity now that there’s a market for it right? And if there ever becomes a day where there’s ah a market for the equities of painting companies.
50:42.33
dybsteve
We you know.
50:50.31
Mr_ Jason Paris
Because the the expectation that they scale to ah, a stable business that is going to drive things quicker than this bureaucratic solving of problems for people that should not be running a business in the first place.
50:52.16
dybsteve
Now.
51:07.15
dybsteve
So how do we raise a standard improve the industry size. Ah.
51:11.61
Mr_ Jason Paris
All wolfholdings.com no kidding. No I think I think you get you get it from 2 directions so another another way you look at is you know all the license trades the plumbers the hvac the electrical if you’re in the twin cities. Ah like in the eighty s seventy s you would see a lot of Chuck in the trucks driving around right. And you know who knows what pricing you get? you get great deals right now now there are no chucking the trucks unless you’re like a savvy investor and you know people for your rental properties right? You’re gonna call someone. You’re getting charged ah a whole lot of money but you also are gonna get it.
51:33.67
dybsteve
Yeah, right? no.
51:43.94
dybsteve
Man.
51:48.40
Mr_ Jason Paris
Ah, estimate right away. Prompt service. Great communication. Ah very transparent pricing strong corporate ethos of accountability. This starts partly from the demands of the clients and so I think happens this is my thesis a little bit right? So you get these outliers of professionalism as ah in industry.
52:03.54
dybsteve
Um, yep.
52:07.36
Mr_ Jason Paris
And they are creating unrealistic for the time expectations among the client base and to an extent among their employees as Well. It’s the clients that are going to drive the professional of an industry more than anything else. What they demand is going to drive the adoption and so if clients say. I Got a taste of clear communication prompt scheduling very straightforward Pricing. You know a clear ethos of accountability. Once they get a taste of that if they start to demand it The market will match that right? and so there will always be an an underbelly market so people say like oh that’s um.
52:35.43
dybsteve
Move.
52:44.52
Mr_ Jason Paris
You no, but there’s always going to be low bidders right? It’s kind of like food preferences. You know people are going to shop shop at you know the the fancy Manny Steakhouse most people are not. They’re going to go to chick-fil-a olive garden red lobster then some people want to take a step down. Go to the food trucks and there will always be a market of people are looking to.
52:44.77
dybsteve
How we have yeah.
52:50.34
dybsteve
Well.
52:56.43
dybsteve
You.
53:04.36
Mr_ Jason Paris
You know, resell and rebuy food from the dumpster right? You’re never going to get rid of that whether it’s in food consumption or in the painting industry. So just allow that to happen. But if if consumers get a taste for what professional services can offer professional home services offer and they start to demand that the market will rise to meet it.
53:05.10
dybsteve
Um, yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s always remember.
53:15.56
dybsteve
In.
53:23.99
Mr_ Jason Paris
And think one of the best so you have you kind of it All is cyclical together right? Few outliers create this unrealistic demand that is then met by high quality business talent I think it’s gonna be flocking into the industry more than we’re gonna build it up out of it and that’s that’s the controversial part where I don’t I don’t know if I don’t know how much we’re building up.
53:25.41
dybsteve
Yeah, yeah.
53:31.49
dybsteve
Not.
53:42.67
Mr_ Jason Paris
Industry as opposed to pulling into.
53:43.10
dybsteve
I think technology is helping is helping to pull up the industry as well. So you know, um, being able to you know and book rate from the website being able to present right on the spot. No more 3 schools.
53:47.29
Mr_ Jason Paris
So yeah.
53:56.11
Mr_ Jason Paris
That is great. Yeah clients Love that and I know I know with your ah with your coaching group. The things that you do you know, connecting all these pieces of technology together that is becoming almost the expectation.
54:04.40
dybsteve
No.
54:09.86
Mr_ Jason Paris
And I would say five years ago when I first did this podcast if you had a scheduling widget on your website. It was like holy the cow I hope you like spending a very low marketing ah dollar amount because you’re roi just skyrocketed right? It’s it’s just almost amazing now here we are five years later show how the industry changes.
54:14.97
dybsteve
Both in.
54:26.36
dybsteve
Yeah, yeah.
54:28.59
Mr_ Jason Paris
If you don’t have a scheduling widget on your website. It’s more of like well I hope you like spending a lot of marketing dollars because You’rei taking a dive because it’s just it’s the opposite right? and you see those adaptations Again, you know it’s It’s been cool I know that you work when I look at your clients.
54:37.65
dybsteve
Yeah, not there.
54:46.31
Mr_ Jason Paris
A lot of them have great websites. It’s It’s no mistake. Yeah, your your your ability to connect all these technological pieces certainly drives drives it there.
54:47.59
dybsteve
No.
54:56.66
dybsteve
