DYB Daily: The MAP to Motivate Your Painters…

Here’s The MAP to Motivate Your Painters…

Your painters need a M.A.P. for motivation.

This acronym comes from the book Drive.

It stands for:

Mastery – Autonomy – Purpose

Mastery is a clear path for them to see, first where they are,

and then where they can grow into, broken out into positions.

Helper, painter, crew lead, etc…

Each position has its clearly established set of responsibilities along with pay ranges.

Like in video games, we start at level 1, and we want to progress to the higher levels.

But first,

you need to clearly lay out what that career path is for them.

Here’s a real example of Ben Campbell’s Campbell Painting Career path
(Thank you for sharing Ben!)

And props to Christian Millitello. He was the first I saw to make these from just a simple mindmap.

Autonomy means don’t be a micro-manager.

Give them a clear scope of work with clearly communicated standards, and then let them be.

As long as you hired for the character, they’ll be fine. If you didn’t, well that’s another story.

Purpose means giving them a vision of where you see the company going.

But moreover, the difference you all together will make in the community.

This is where community service events like Paint It Forward come through big time.

We averaged 4 PIFs a year because of the difference it made in the culture of our team.

Once your culture is strong, your company takes care of itself. And that is a high-level overview of the M.A.P. to motivate your painters 😀
