Painting Contractors: Top 5 Ways to Get More Instagram Followers

Hey, how’s it going guys!

It’s Greg here from Green Pro Painting, also DYB Coach and today I want to share with you,

The Top 5 tips for Instagram to grow your user base and also to get more followers.

Tip #1: Use Hashtags

Make sure that you use hashtags.

Hashtags are really important with Instagram, and you want to use ones that are not only pertaining to your industry, but also to your client base.

For example, if you are an interior/exterior residential painter, one of the ones you might want to consider using would be hashtag DIY (#DIY).

Now, this is a good one because it has 42 million posts in total, which is a lot for a hashtag.

Use hashtags that get used often, and you want to group them together, a minimum of 26, is the recommended number for the algorithm on Instagram.

Another example would be something hyper-local to where you are at. So, for our painting company, there is a hashtag here, it is called #YadaGreenville.

It’s something where all the locals get together and post about local cuisines, local contractors, real estate, just anything that you can imagine that’s hyper-local. And this one for us has over 1.2 million posts, which is a very high number.

Another one you might want to consider would be #ResidentialPainting, that one has far less post on there, it’s around 24,500 in total.

Tip #2: Engage Your Audience

Another thing that you want to do is, engage your audience.

So, anytime that you post anything, whether it is a question, a contest, anything like that and somebody posts a comment or even just a smiley emoji, make sure that you respond with at least 4 words.

“Thank you very much for your reply”, something along those lines, show some appreciation for them to be in there.

Tip #3: Posts & Stories

Another thing that you can do is record videos and post to your stories.

You want to make sure that you stay very consistent with this –record just simple stuff about your company, what you guys are working on at that time, you don’t have to be really salesy with it.

Just keep it simple and say, “hey, today we are painting Mrs. Jones kitchen cabinet, and this is what it looks like”, just give a quick video.

Show your guys working, show that they are professionally inclined, let the customer decide what it is about your business that they like, and it’s very easy to show this stuff.

Tip #4: Post Location

Another thing you can do is, post your location. So, at the bottom, when you go to post a photo on Instagram, you can select your location.

If you serve different demographics, maybe you want to post something specifically for an area, like if you live inside Philly and you want to get something on one of the Northern parts of Philly, you can actually go in and change it on there, change your location to wherever you want to target that audience.

That’s a really good one to use because local people will get on there, and search their city, and your post would show up there.

Tip #5: Engage in Community

Another thing that you want to do is, go on and follow these hashtags that you are posting your business, and the hyper-local ones especially.

Be sure to like posts and comment on people’s photos and just engage in the community, that’s the biggest thing that I can say that you guys can get organic lead follows from.

It’s just by getting out there and letting people know that you are engaged, you would be surprised how quickly you can get some results.

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment, I would be happy to respond to you.

About the Author

As many of you know, my journey has been one of grit, grace, and transformation. At 19, I was a high school dropout, single father, and struggling paint contractor in Michigan. I later moved to Florida, where I faced both personal and professional hardships. With nothing left to lose, I turned to prayer—and was blessed with a relentless hunger to learn. I devoured books, attended seminars, and discovered better ways to streamline and grow my business—even through the Great Recession (and yes, I did hit the wife lottery along the way!). In 2014, I published How To Double Your Business and later sold the painting business, launching a new chapter: coaching others to grow their businesses. For the past 10 years, I’ve dedicated myself to helping business owners scale through the DYB System, while also drawing from frameworks like EOS, Scaling Up, and The Four Disciplines of Execution. Yet something was still missing—something more adaptive, integrated, and complete. Then I found Pinnacle. After months of research and interviews with other Guides, I joined Pinnacle. Their tools and strategies have exceeded every expectation. Now, as a Pinnacle Business Guide, I help leadership teams implement a custom-tailored operating system that draws from the best in the industry—but flexes with your unique business. It’s a dynamic, proven approach to achieve clarity, momentum, and lasting growth. I’m no longer taking on any more 1:1 coaching clients… Instead, I now specialize in working with visionary business owners who are ready to get their leadership teams aligned—around a clear vision, a focused strategy, and an actionable execution plan. With the tools and process I now have as a Pinnacle Business Guide, I help turn alignment into momentum, and momentum into results. If your business is growing—but your leadership team isn’t fully rowing in the same direction—let’s talk.
