I had a ton of missed calls, but no messages. I needed the work; why were there no voicemail messages?
I realized I needed a change. I was missing sales I should have been capturing.
What does your voicemail message sound like?
Do you have one setup, or do you leave your automated assistant spout off your phone number only?– like I was!
Is it surprising that no one leaves you messages?
You’re asking yourself….
Was the missed call a fresh lead for a big job? or a sales call?….
You’re about to call them back but don’t want to catch another sneaky salesperson pitching you the best SEO service for low monthly payments! But you call them back anyway…..
Fortunately, it’s a great lead and you setup the estimate!
“Why did they not leave me a message?” you ask.
I decided to do something different, change things up by adding a customized voicemail message.
My new voicemail message started getting a few laughs, one person couldn’t hardly leave a message they were laughing so much!
It was simple but genius! (Thanks Steve!)
“Hello! You’ve reached Jeff and ESP Painting. Leave me your name, number, and favorite color and I will call you back soon! Thank you!”
Did you catch it?It’s different, easy, professional, fun and yet it catches you off guard… in a good way.
Wendy left me a voicemail message, laughing and, of course, left her favorite color…. White.
When I called Wendy back I used her favorite color as a conversation starter which got another laugh!
“Wendy, it’s Jeff at ESP Painting. So, your favorite color is white, correct?…. Is that only after Labor Day?” She is now feeling relaxed about me and knows I’m real, not some sales painting robot who cares only about the money. I didn’t know anything about her and I already asked her for her favorite color!
I met Wendy later that week and closed the deal on the spot!
A good voicemail compelled her to leave her information for me to call her back. Had I left my voicemail greeting as the standard non-emotional phone number read by a robot, I would not have even received a voicemail message.
So what can you do to create a voicemail message that will get people to leave you a message?
In the book Little Red Book of Selling Jeffrey Gitomer talks about voicemail greetings and he is a master! Here are some of his advice and voicemail message examples below, but you better go buy the book!
- Hello, Painter John here from DYB Painting! Rather than give you instructions you already have memorized, I’m going to use this quality time to share my favorite quote of the week: ‘(and then you’d read one of your favorite quotes)’.”
- Congratulations! You’ve called the right Painter Bill! It just so happens to be the wrong time. Please leave a message and I’ll be back in touch before you know it.”
- “Hi, it’s Dave. I’m out painting the world, one house at a time. If you’d like me to paint your home, just leave me a message and I’ll get back to you shortly. If you’re calling for any other reason, well, I’ll call you back, too!”
What does this say about you?
You are Creative!
You are Smart!
You are Funny!
You will be a joy to work with!
Why does your voicemail message not sound like the real you?
Go ahead and give it a shot. I dare you!
