How to Score Interior Work for Rainy Days
On the next rainy day, here is what you do… I am Ron Ramsden and I am a DYB coach, also a painting contractor here in New England.
The next day of rain, you have to do this one thing, if you haven’t done it already. And the story goes from here… As I was in the paint store yesterday, it was raining, it was kind of an unexpected rain day, they said possibly, and we never expected it because the weathermen are always not right, but it was raining.
I stopped in the paint store about 8:30 in the morning to get some stuff for an order for next week, and I walked in, as a painter, just killing time.
A little while later, as I was actually shooting the breeze…another painter came in, with his buddy, they got rained out. I said, what are you going to do today? One guy said I am going home, I am going to bed.
The other guy said he was going to go watch TV and one guy was going to go work on his truck.
And I was like, whoa… do you have any interior work? They said, well we are just finishing up the season outside, we didn’t schedule anything, we don’t have anything. So, I am thinking to myself, what could they be doing?
Well, this is what you can do –let your customers know that you do the interiors too. Most of the customers who you work on the interior of their house don’t know you work outside and the people that you have painted their exterior houses don’t know you work on the inside of the house, so this is the easiest thing to do to get that message across.
Grab a camera just like I am, if it is your iPhone, whatever phone you have is now a video recorder. And say something like this,
“hey, I am Ron Ramsden, I am your painter, I own Ramsden painting, and as you know we have been painting on the exterior of the homes, cleaning gutters, power washing and such, but do you know we also paint interiors? We can do drywall repairs, we can take care of that stained ceiling, we can remove your wallpaper, we can wallpaper, and we also do all kind of interior painting. And lately, we have been getting a lot of calls for kitchen cabinet painting, if you need us, please give us a call at…”
It’s an easy quick one-minute video, you can do one for interiors, for the people you work for and for the outside, you can do one. Let them both know what you are doing, two separate videos.
And then, copy it to an email, and on the subject line say, “I have a secret for you, and please watch this video” and send it to every single one of your customers, every single one of them. And next week, send it again, and send it for the next 4 weeks in a row, just different times, maybe every Monday, at 6 o’ clock or Tuesday at 6 o’ clock, when you think that most people are going to be watching this, and see what happens.
And then maybe, if you really have a lot of energy, follow up with a phone call or a note. You are going to be surprised at how many customers you have right now that do not realize that if you are an exterior painter, you can also work inside. And that if you are an interior painter, you can work outside.
