1. Why? 

First, you must know with crystal clear certainty WHY you should go for it. Because it’s your WHY that will carry you through the tough and discouraging times. So get very clear on WHY you want this and keep your WHY top of mind.


2. Keep it “Above the Line”

Nothing changes unless we do. For us to first change, we need to take complete Ownership, Accountability, & Responsibility, for our situation, and say, “I am where I am, because of every choice I have made up until this point.”

Whether this is completely true or not, NOW you have the power to change. But if you don’t, you are not going to grow. As long as you believe your situation is because of the government, the economy, or maybe your spouse, your parents, or kids.. you cannot change because every one of those are external.

Instead, choose to keep it Above The Line. If you do, you now have complete power to change your situation. For me, this was a major Game Changer!


3. Self-talk

What’s your self talk? What do you say to yourself as your thinking, “I can’t do this.” I tried that once and it didn’t work. Hint, almost nothing works the 1st time. In fact, most won’t even start to work until the 6th or 7th time, so go for 10 attempts.

Decide today to monitor and guard your self-talk. Catch yourself when it’s negative and say, “Self, keep it positive!” And watch your life outlook change before your eyes.


4. More challenges you face… 

the further you are able to succeed.

There are no losses, only lessons. 

So, you have it rough? You feel like you are facing too many obstacles? Well, you are in luck. Actually, I don’t believe in luck. Instead, you are very fortunate that you have so many challenges.

Because it’s those who face the most challenges that become the most successful!

I used to think poor me for my dysfunctional maybe even dark childhood and my ex-wife leaving me and then being a single father trying to grind it out…

But if it weren’t for all of those very tough situations, I would not have the grit and drive I do today to achieve and reach new heights.

The current challenges you are in, are the grit and motivation training for your success.

Own and embrace them all the way to the top!


5. Cut The Cord 

Have you ever stopped to think about where all of our preconceived notions come from? We can open a whole bag of worms here, but we won’t.

Instead, let’s just look at where all of these ideas come from that there is no hope. Where do average people receive this constant barrage of hopelessness and despair from?

Yes, 24/7 news… or more accurately 24/7 blues!  Why? Because, unfortunately, bad news sells.

Think about this. If you are walking downtown and you pass a newspaper stand or dispenser and the headline reads, “Great day today, and so many good people in the world doing good things.”

You would likely smile, think to yourself that is great, but you would not buy a newspaper. You’d walk on.

But, if it said, Murder, Rage, Terrorist, or Epic Storm coming our way, you are far more likely to buy that blues-paper.

To sell as many papers as they can or to keep the Blues going 24/7 on TV across 5 millions blues TV stations (remember when we just had the 6 & 10 o’clock news?), they have to dig and search for bad things to publish, and then they drag this “Breaking News Crisis” out for a week rehashing the same dreaded images for days or until they find a new one!

We are often asked, “how are you guys so happy all the time?” First, Christ. Second, we don’t fill our heads with all of that depressing Blues.

Cut the cord. Disconnect cable.

We did this years ago, and trust me. Life is awesome!


6. Get Accountability & Perspective

As business owners, not only is the path not clear for you because you feel like you have too much to do, but we get away with too much.

You hold your team accountable to execute what you require, but who holds you accountable to do what you must to to achieve your goals?

You do have written goals and are clear on where you want to go, be, do, and have, right?

Get an accountability partner. But make sure they will, in fact, hold you accountable and also that it is reciprocated.

If you have 4-5 like minded and driven business friends, start a local Mastermind GroupThis is what I did. If you read my book, I talked about it. We called it the Monday 20 and it served us very well. 

So well, that I modeled the Monday 20, for our DYB Mastermind Groups, but you must be a DYB Cafè member first, to join a DYB Mastermind.

Something to keep in mind as you create your own local mastermind group, is to be very selective of who you choose.  Jim Rohn said it best:

“You are the average of your 5 closest friends.”

7. Throw your hat over the wall

I don’t know if this story is true, but it has served me very well and here is how I remember it.

President John Kennedy was walking home from school with his friends. As they were walking down the road they came to a wall. A big, tall, thick stone wall.

The boys started to challenge each other to see if they could clime this tall wall.

After some back and forth, Kennedy, said I can do it. They all shut up and paused to watch this challenge be met.

Young John Kennedy, walked up to the wall, threw his hat over it, and then began to climb.

After some time and a struggle, he eventually scaled this tall wall, grabbed his hat, and came back over.

His friends congratulated him, and then asked him why he threw his hat over the wall.

He replied, “My Mom gave me this hat and there was no way I was going home without it. So, I knew that if I threw it over the wall, I had to find a way up and over it.”

How can you throw your hat over the wall? How can you commit so that you will follow through to the end?
